La Mala Banana is a one-human art press for beautiful weirdos who don't fit in neat boxes (which is all of us, by the way).
Here you'll find raw or polished zines, absurdist art & coloring books, big, cheesy, pinback buttons, postcards, and other beautifully strange paper things made with jubilant chaos. The unifying them is simply my honest takeaway from my human experience.
I design everything myself. I relish messy edges and imperfect lines, and I believe fervently in gentleness, but also in speaking and writing the truth even when it's uncomfortable.
Meet the artist.
I'm a multidisciplinary artist weaving together words, images, and handcrafted books. As an author, poet, bookbinder, and illustrator, I create work that explores the intersections of our various identities, notions of beauty, and search for belonging.
As a Latinx queer human, I am aware of how I bring my lived experience into everything I make—finding magic in the margins and hopefully, conjuring community through creative expression. I am telling my stories because there weren’t any voices like mine when I needed them most. My passions include poetry that moves the heart, illustrations that tell stories, the meditative craft of bookbinding, and the way of cats (50% gleeful destruction/50% zen contentedness in a sunbeam).
I'm here to connect, learn, and share this wild, wonderful journey with fellow creators and dreamers.
La Mala Banana Monthly: Zine Club for Purveyors of the Peculiar
Each month, I send out a zine filled with some writings, comics, sketchbook scans, and whatever subject is possessing me that month. It's an honest catalogue of my experience as a spotty banana making my way in the world; full of absurdist joy and delivered to your mailbox. Sometimes, instead of a zine, it might be a multipage letter This depends on my feedback from you, dear reader.
